The seed was planted and we did make some solid "real people" contacts out of that encounter. We went ahead in the early 90's and redid what had been done. Better, I rented (& then bought) a video camera and Geri and I put together five out of the six tapes included here. (the other, #6, Deer from Field to Freezer was the one tape from initial shooting - by different photog - that yet survives.) We have been shooting one video for each booklet (chapter in #1 large book) having shot #'s 1,2,3,6 &10 to date. Just NOW I am working on further videos. New computer - new digital video camera - software. Will keep you posted. If you have been counting, you note an extra tape here. Our good friend Jeff Schmidt has gotten deeply interest in asiatic composite bows and so we did a video on this also. |

This is where it all began for us with the first booklet back in '85. It seems everyone wants to know how to Brain Tan skins into Buckskin. Here Geri does the work (of course) while I tape. From raw skin to finished Buckskin - every step - we show you the exact way that we do it - in detail. YOU WILL LEARN TO MAKE BUCKSKIN FROM THIS TAPE (the book also). We had tanned with the most famous brain tanners in the country during the late 80's & early 90's - NOT ONE WENT FROM RAW SKIN TO FINISHED BUCKSKIN FASTER THAN US!!! The secret? None really. We just have adopted the simplest most time efficient methods that we have either discovered or been exposed to over the years. As with every skill we do, we look for function before art. If stuck in a real primitive situation, we want the easiest, most efficient (both for time and energy) method. |

3 methods of making friction fire by rubbing sticks. We like to concentrate on the hand drill - there's a reason that this was the most common fire making method used throughout the world by aboriginals. Two components - the drill and the hearth. Sometimes from the same wood source. Under the harshest conditions, when you need fire the most, the bow drill is easier if all components are available - which brings us to - Cordage - can't make a bow drill fire without it. Here we illustrate what characteristics to look for in plants, how to prepare the fibers and then how to twist them into usable string/rope. |

From tree to finished bow. In the past, I spent a lot of time making bows and not knowing how. Once the rules of physics hit home, I says "of course". Now I make bows better, faster. I spend a lot of time in this tape in front of a chalk board (a real one), drawing out and diagraming theRULES OF PHYSICS pertaining to making a piece of wood bend efficiently to make a bow. In my opinion, this is the most valuable part of the tape. Once YOU understand these rules you can make a bow from just about any piece of wood. Once you get the bow, you gotta make an - Arrow - and to make an arrow from a stick requires some rules also. Here again I feel that I've come on some simple rules that make it a not too difficult a project. |

Using only common knives found in most kitchens (the included book illustrates using stone blades), we here take a deer sized animal (goat, no deer available at the time) from moment of kill to ready to package for the freezer. Skinning, sinew removal (this was one tough guy), quartering, deboning and final cutting - this video takes you through each step. Large game is put together the same as smaller game. |

In conjunction with fire, Shelter is one of the most important skills that one will need in any primitive living and/or survival situation. Most outdoors people don't have any idea of the what's and why's of this important skill. As with bow making, John here spends plenty of time explaining these rules, and concepts - and materials - and then he and Geri (+ one friend) head out and make four different type, semi-permanent homes from a variety of natural materials. A place that one can be protected from the elements (wind and water especially), have a fire on the inside and room to work on a project. I know of no comparable information source on this subject that will teach you to accomplish the same. |

by Jeff Schmidt & John McPherson Centuries ago this bow was used to kick butt. Short, powerful, and drawing a long heavy arrow this enabled competent horsemen to literally ride over their opponents. Horn and sinew glued to a wooden core made this bow capable of casting an arrow over one half a mile. Jeff has built over two dozen of these bows of various types and here shows his favored building techniques. The concept is so simple it will surprise you. |

The predictable removal of flakes from stone thru percussion flaking, the baseline of all flintknapping, Unlike our other videos, this one took a lot of "doing" - not so much in knapping but in getting the concepts across to you. The rules are few and simple. Putting them together is the tough part. I know of many excellent knappers who can do it - but not explain it. One half of this 2 hour video is spent in the classroom learning the physics behind flake removal. The 2nd hour is spent (1) removing flakes from a core and (2) making a bifacial preform. Flake by flake, unravel the secrets. I have put here everything that I wish I knew many years back. This video will enable you to predictably remove flakes from rock. Thru percussion flaking, the base rules of flintknapping are defined and explained. Here is presented the very base of flintknapping. |

"You have done a good job of relating what you do and why. It will serve well ... helping people with basic percussion. You do a very good job of explaining your logic of where a flake should be removed and why ... the video can give newcomers to knapping a helpful boost." Bob Patten, Master Flintknapper

Let's Make an Arrowhead by John McPherson Following the rules presented in the previous video (Breaking Rock), John in this tape uses a lot of percussion and also introduces how to incorporate antler (and copper) as tools to remove flakes by pressure. Making two arrowheads, one from a flake and another from a rock, various obstacles are overcome in making, flake by flake, both arrowheads. Making an arrowhead is simple - here John shows why - and how. 60 minutes - $24.95 (postpaid) ISBN 0-9678777-9-2 |
